06/05/2010Point O' Woods Dock, NY Sea Robin (1)
After seeing tons of boats out in the water right off the dock, I finally made it down there to try some casts. I had to fish, since I lugged my gear all the way from NC! Anyway, I had some bites, I saw a small striper following my lure, but I didn't get anything on the dock in the morning. The afternoon was pretty quiet, except for the thuds from the bean bags for cornhole. I did manage to pull in a good-sized sea robin, which was croaking up a storm. We also saw what looked to be a school of blues running by, and I lost the tail on my grub in the frenzy, but no fish. Sad.

Speckled Trout (1)
Beautiful day out there, though the wind was picking up out of the SW all morning. Highlight of the year, though, as we stumbled upon a school of slot-sized puppy drum hundreds thick! We were in water about 2 feet deep, and you could see them swimming by, their red backs gleaming bronze under the water. Sometimes they would get so shallow, their dorsal fins would stick out. Some were tailing. I saw some deep holes in the sand where they were schooling, so I think they were after whatever was in those holes. Luckily for me, they were also hitting my yellow jig with white Gulp shrimp! I caught 3 nice fish before the 10:45 - 11 AM dead zone, when all of sudden, the bite stops and they run like scared from your bait.

Flounder (1)
Crystal clear water, and the wind shifted onshore. It got rough and pushed in a lot of seaweed, which made fishing all but impossible in the afternoon/evening. All my fish were caught on a yellow jighead and the same pearl white gulp shrimp

Atlantic Devil Ray (1)
Pompano (5)
The Devil Ray was amazing. Jumped 3 times, and fought well. One of those once in a lifetime experiences. Joey did well, catching speckled trout, black drum, sea mullet, flounder, and who knows what else!

08/16/2009North Topsail Island, NC Flounder (1)
Another combo report from Topsail. The long and short of it is that I caught one fish, a decent-sized flounder, all weekend. I tried off the beach, from the kayak, and even from a boat as we were exploring the ICW. I'm starting to question my fishing skillz!

Sea Mullet (3)
Dogfish (shark) (1)
Combo report from the weekend. The good news is that I caught some fish on N. Topsail! The bad news is that they were tiny. One of the sea mullets was so small that I put it on a pro rig and threw it back out there to try and catch something bigger. Alas, not even a bite! The beach is looking healthier, though. There were tons of mole crabs and coquinas in the sand, so perhaps, with time, the bigger fish will arrive. Or, maybe it was just a bad time of the season, with mostly juveniles around.
10/15/2008Wash-Baum Bridge Boat Launch, NC Puppy Drum (1)
First time putting in at the boat launch. You have to be quick, 'cause it's pretty busy, but it's an easy place to put in. I paddled over to the creeks/marshes to the right, after you launch. Wow! There's a lot of water back there, and many of the channels are deep - over 6 feet! I only caught one puppy drum, but I was doing more exploring than fishing. I plan to return to fish some more!

Sheepshead (1)
Beautiful day on the beach. Could not find any mullet, so I went with a bottom rig and mole crabs. Worked! First ever sheepshead. I thought they liked bridges and pilings? The sea mullet was huge - probably citation-sized. Only fished for about an hour, 'cause most of the day was devoted to volleyball.

What a morning! It was so windy, that I didn't expect to catch a thing. Turns out, I caught a little of everything! The flounder was a keeper, but everything else was a little undersized.
