Sheepshead (1)
Beautiful day on the beach. Could not find any mullet, so I went with a bottom rig and mole crabs. Worked! First ever sheepshead. I thought they liked bridges and pilings? The sea mullet was huge - probably citation-sized. Only fished for about an hour, 'cause most of the day was devoted to volleyball.

What a morning! It was so windy, that I didn't expect to catch a thing. Turns out, I caught a little of everything! The flounder was a keeper, but everything else was a little undersized.

Speckled Trout (1)
Fished the bridge for old times sake, starting around 4 PM. Caught a small speckled trout, and then a school of bluefish came through. That was fun! As soon as my Gulp hit the water, BAM. Had some bites right before dark that could have been stripers, but they were non-committal, and I didn't manage to hook anything. Fun time, though. They've cleared out the parking lot a little bit, which was nice, as my U-turn radius with the trailer is pretty big!

Access at the propeller is severely impacted by the start of new bridge construction. You have to haul your kayak about 100 yards through bird-sized mosquito-infested grass to get to the point where you slosh through the mosquito-infested marsh to put your boat in. Parking is limited, too. That said, there aren't as many people over there, so bait was easier to catch. I still had fun, though I wish that I had sprayed myself with bug spray before and after the water.
09/13/2008Pipeline (South Nags Head), NC Bluefish (2)
Bluefish were running everywhere. Only managed to hook onto a couple, though. Lost plenty of bait. Though, the bluefish weren't the highlight of this trip. First, I saw what looked to be a 10'+ shark jump out of the water and then crash down on his back. Plenty of king mackerel jumping out in the open water, as well.

I also hooked onto something big. Something beyond my capability, my equipment. It was literally like hooking onto a freight train as it was passing by. It just about spooled my reel heading straight out to sea before I tightened the drag and purposely snapped the line. I couldn't budge this thing. A guy walking up the beach who saw me fighting this creature said it was likely a large stingray. I tend to agree.

I didn't catch anything, but I wanted to just get something up for 2008! I found a nice kayak put in at a city park on N. Topsail (north of the big bridge). There's plenty of bait right at the put in, and you paddle out through a nice area and into the ICW. I had a ton of bites, but nothing felt big enough to worry about. Tried Gulp shrimp and live mullet.
10/08/2007Gene's Beach, Kill Devil Hills, NC Speckled Trout (2)
The ocean was so warm and clear, that we decided not to kayak and just fish from the beach instead. First time catching specks from the beach and on mullet. They were very small, though.
10/07/2007Oregon Inlet, NC Flounder (1)
Speckled Trout (1)
Roger and I fished the evening, post VBI VI. The bite was not as ferocious as the morning. Roger caught the flounder on live mullet, and I caught the speck on Gulp shrimp.

A new spot! Found a beautiful hidden lake, and when we got there, two bucks were running through the lake. One of the puppy drum I caught was about 23". Liz caught several small speckled trout.
